What Is LVT Flooring?
LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile, a decorative flooring format designed to imitate the appearance of other materials while offering relatively straightforward maintenance. Despite the name, LVT also comes in elongated planks to resemble wood flooring. The printed design may be paired with an embossed surface, a bevelled edge or a particular laying pattern to enhance the visual effect. A warm oak plank can suit a traditional room; pale grey stone- or marble-effect tiles can give a kitchen or bathroom a more contemporary look.
Not every LVT product is built or fitted in the same way. Some use a floating locking joint, while flexible dryback tiles are bonded onto a prepared subfloor. The construction influences the floor height, preparation requirements and suitable installation accessories. The complete LVT flooring buying guide explains which specifications to compare before choosing a colour.
Click LVT Flooring: A Practical Floating Floor
Click LVT flooring uses interlocking edges to connect boards without the full-spread adhesive required for conventional dryback installations. The Luvanto Click Plus range uses rigid-core technology and integrated backing in its specified construction. This can make installation more convenient on an appropriate subfloor, but it does not eliminate the need for flatness, stability or correct expansion detailing. Never assume a soft additional underlay is required: some locking systems prohibit it.
Click flooring can be attractive for straightforward renovation projects, but it is not automatically suitable in rooms with extreme temperature changes or strong direct sunlight. Compare the fitting requirements carefully and read click LVT versus glue-down LVT: which should you choose? before ordering the system.
Glue-Down LVT Flooring: A Bonded Design Finish
Glue-down LVT is also known as dryback flooring. Each tile or plank is fixed to a properly prepared, smooth and stable substrate with compatible adhesive. These ranges are particularly suited to design-led installations where careful control of plank position, borders and decorative patterns is important. A thinner floor covering can help where threshold height is limited, although the subfloor preparation and adhesive specification need to be right.
For products such as Luvanto Design and Premium Design, the installer must consider moisture, temperature, levelling and the approved bonding system. View our universal LVT flooring adhesive and high-temperature LVT adhesive only after checking compatibility with the chosen tile and room.
Wood-Effect LVT Planks, Stone-Effect Tiles and Marble Designs
Wood-effect luxury vinyl flooring offers the appearance of a timber floor in formats and tones suitable for many UK interiors. Light oak and maple-style designs can brighten a small room, while warmer and deeper shades work well against traditional joinery. Deep embossing and bevelled edges can add definition, although the exact appearance will vary between ranges and colours.
Stone-effect and marble-effect LVT can create the visual style of slate, limestone or polished stone without relying on a traditional ceramic grout layout. Think about the colour of kitchen cabinets, walls and skirting before buying. Examine physical samples in natural and artificial light and compare texture as well as colour; online photography cannot always communicate the full effect.
Herringbone, Chevron and Basketweave LVT Flooring
A patterned luxury vinyl floor can act as a central design feature. Herringbone uses repeated right-angle plank joints, while chevron forms sharp V-shaped points. Basketweave creates a grouped, woven appearance. These looks need the correct tiles or engineered click-profile components; standard straight-lay planks are not necessarily suitable for decorative patterns.
Layout affects more than appearance. It influences preparation, fitting labour and cutting allowances. Our herringbone, chevron and basketweave LVT flooring guide
Is Luxury Vinyl Tile Flooring Suitable for Kitchens and Bathrooms?
LVT is a popular choice for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and hallways because the vinyl surface is generally straightforward to clean after everyday spills. However, a vinyl tile that is described as waterproof does not make the complete room or subfloor waterproof. Moisture can travel beneath edges and joints, so leaks and standing water should be dealt with promptly.
Check room-specific limitations. Luvanto advises that its LVT should not be used in wet rooms or shower enclosures. Areas exposed to strong sun through large glazing also require special care in selecting the right system. Read our guide to LVT in kitchens, bathrooms and rooms with underfloor heating for practical installation considerations.
LVT Flooring and Underfloor Heating
Many LVT ranges can be used with a suitable, correctly controlled underfloor heating installation. Compatibility must be confirmed for the exact product and floor build-up. The manufacturer's maximum permitted temperature is typically measured at the flooring surface or adhesive interface rather than as the room thermostat reading. Luvanto publishes a 27°C limit for relevant systems and special instructions for heating operation and extreme temperatures.
Do not assume that any click floor or high-temperature adhesive is automatically suitable next to south-facing bifold doors. Match the flooring, substrate and heating to the latest fitting guidance and seek technical confirmation where necessary.
How to Choose the Correct LVT Thickness and Wear Layer
Product specifications may list the overall tile thickness, size, construction, wear layer, surface texture and use classification. The total thickness is not the same as the protective wear-layer thickness. A thick rigid board does not automatically have a more durable wear surface than a thinner bonded product. Compare the exact manufacturer claims against expected footfall, children, pets, rolling furniture and any commercial usage.
Consider the final floor height and how it meets existing doors, thresholds and adjacent coverings. In older houses, even a small height difference can require a transition detail or adjustment to door clearance.
Preparing Your Subfloor for Luxury Vinyl Flooring
A lasting LVT installation begins beneath the planks. Concrete may require moisture testing, smoothing or a suitable system for residual damp. Timber may need loose boards securing, appropriate overboarding and movement control. Glue-down LVT can reveal substrate imperfections, while floating click joints need support across the floor. An extra soft underlay is not a reliable substitute for levelling.

How Much LVT Flooring Should You Order?
Measure the length and width of each part of your room in metres and multiply to calculate the area in square metres. Add shaped recesses separately and check the actual square-metre coverage of the chosen pack. Coverage varies between Luvanto straight-lay planks, stone tiles, herringbone and other patterns. Round up to complete packs after including a suitable cutting allowance for the room and layout.
Patterned floors can produce more waste than simple straight layouts. Remember to budget for compatible adhesive or underlay, floor preparation, trims, fitting, delivery and VAT as appropriate. Our LVT measuring, pack sizes and flooring quantity guide

LVT Flooring FAQs
What does LVT stand for?
LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile. It can be manufactured in wood-effect plank, stone-effect tile and decorative pattern formats.
Is click LVT better than glue-down LVT?
Neither system is best in every room. Click floors are installed as a floating assembly, while glue-down LVT bonds to a prepared subfloor. The correct choice depends on conditions, preparation, fitting and design.
Does LVT flooring need underlay?
Some click ranges already have integrated backing; conventional dryback LVT is normally glued to an approved substrate. Do not add an unapproved underlay.
Can LVT be used with underfloor heating?
Many products can, provided the manufacturer approves the specific floor and the system observes the required temperature limits and installation procedures.
Is LVT flooring suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?
Many ranges are, but correct edge details and moisture management remain essential. Luvanto does not recommend standard LVT for shower enclosures or wet rooms.
Is herringbone LVT harder to install?
Decorative patterns require accurate setting-out and often additional cutting. Dedicated products and experienced fitting are particularly important for complicated layouts.
How do I clean LVT?
Remove grit regularly and damp-mop with a manufacturer-approved LVT product. Avoid steam cleaning and abrasive chemicals.
