Not necessarily. Both colours can be used in engineering applications if their declared properties meet the design. Manufacturers offer red Class B products and blue Class B products, while Class A products are commonly blue. So the job should determine the required performance first, not the colour.

Engineering Brick Class Matters More Than Colour
Wienerberger describes Class A engineering bricks as having at least 125 N/mm² compressive strength and no more than 4.5% water absorption. Class B bricks have at least 75 N/mm² compressive strength and no more than 7% water absorption. These benchmarks explain why two blue bricks can have different performance classes even though they look very similar.

Red Engineering Bricks
Red engineering bricks combine engineering performance with a traditional fired-clay red appearance. Which Is Stronger: Red or Blue?
Neither colour is automatically stronger. The class and product declaration answer that question. A Class A blue product has a higher minimum class strength than a Class B red product, but a Class B blue brick and Class B red brick can share the same class benchmark.
Do not use colour as a structural shortcut. Compare the declared N/mm² value of the exact products and follow any minimum strength stated by the designer.
Which Has Lower Water Absorption?
Again, class and product matter more than colour. Class A has the lower maximum water-absorption benchmark, while Class B has a higher but still low limit. A blue Class B product is not automatically less absorbent than a red Class B product.
Low absorption is useful in demanding exposure, but the wall still needs suitable mortar, drainage, DPCs, cavity trays, copings and waterproofing details where applicable.
Red vs Blue for Below-DPC Masonry
Both colours can be used in selected below-DPC or moisture-prone details where the exact brick is suitable and specified. If Class B performance is acceptable, colour may be chosen to coordinate with visible surrounding masonry. If Class A is specified, use an actual Class A product rather than assuming a dark blue Class B brick is equivalent.
Red vs Blue for Retaining Walls
A retaining wall needs more than a durable brick. Soil pressure, foundation size, wall thickness, drainage and backfill all affect performance. Engineering bricks may be selected because of their strength and absorption characteristics, but the wall should be designed appropriately for its height and loading.
For a visible retaining wall, red can blend with traditional brickwork while blue can create a strong contrast. Technical suitability still comes first.
Which Looks Better?
That is a design decision. Red engineering bricks can sit more quietly alongside conventional red facing brickwork. Blue engineering bricks create a darker, more deliberate contrast and can work well with grey paving, black metalwork and modern landscaping. Neither is inherently more attractive.
Engineering-brick appearance may vary more than purpose-made facing products because manufacturers prioritise performance. If visual matching is critical, consider using a suitable facing brick in visible areas and keeping engineering bricks where technical performance is required.
Mortar Colour with Red and Blue Engineering Bricks
