Accurate measuring is one of the simplest ways to avoid expensive mistakes when buying outdoor flooring. Ordering too little can delay a project and create a risk that later material comes from a different batch. Ordering far too much ties up money and leaves bulky slabs to store. The aim is not just to calculate the square metres: you also need to consider cuts, pattern, pack coverage, borders and installation products.

This guide uses real examples from the JJ Building Materials outdoor flooring range to show how to approach a patio, path or feature area before placing an order.

Make a simple plan of the area

Start with a top-down sketch. It does not need to be architectural, but it should show walls, doors, steps, drains, garden buildings, permanent planters and changes of direction. Add dimensions to the drawing as you measure them. For larger projects, measure important dimensions twice.

A drawing helps you see whether the area can be divided into simple rectangles. It also reveals where cuts will occur and whether a border or sett course could improve the layout.

Calculating a rectangular patio

Multiply the length by the width. A patio 6m long and 4m wide has a basic area of 24m². This is the starting figure, not necessarily the order quantity. You still need to account for cutting and the exact pack sizes of the selected product.

Measure in metres to keep the calculation simple. If a dimension is 4.5m, use 4.5 rather than rounding it down.

Calculating an L-shaped area

Divide the shape into two rectangles. For example, one section might be 5m x 3m and another 2m x 2m. The first is 15m² and the second is 4m², giving 19m² in total. This is more reliable than estimating the entire shape from its longest dimensions.

Use the same method for stepped terraces and side paths. Break complicated areas into simple pieces and add the results.

Do you subtract flower beds and obstacles?

Large permanent areas that definitely will not be paved can be deducted. Small posts, narrow beds and drain covers may not be worth deducting because the cuts around them create waste. Think in terms of usable slabs rather than purely mathematical area.

If an obstacle sits near the middle of a slab grid, you may still consume almost a full slab to cut around it. Your plan should therefore guide the allowance.

Choose the product before finalising quantity

Different products have different pack coverages. Pavestone Evo Grey Porcelain Paving is currently listed in 900 x 600mm slabs with packs covering 6.48m², 12.96m² and 25.92m². If your calculated requirement is close to one of those pack sizes, the available options can make ordering straightforward.

Why the slab format affects waste

Large paving can create fewer joints, but large offcuts can also become waste if they cannot be reused elsewhere. Smaller modules may fit irregular spaces more efficiently. This does not mean small is always better; it means the layout should be considered before the order.

Sketch several rows of the actual slab size across the area. Check the likely cut at the far edge. If it leaves an extremely narrow strip, moving the starting line or using a border may improve the result.

Allowing for cuts and breakages

There is no perfect waste percentage for every job. A simple rectangle with a straightforward layout may need a smaller allowance than a diagonal pattern, curved boundary or area with many obstacles. The installer may recommend an allowance after reviewing the site.

It is usually sensible to retain spare matching slabs after installation. Future damage or alterations are easier to deal with when you already have material from the original order.

Measuring a border with porcelain setts

If you plan to frame the patio with Pavestone Porcelain Setts, measure the perimeter that will receive the border. Then calculate how many setts fit along each length based on the chosen 100 x 100mm or 200 x 100mm format and the intended joint width.

Do not simply add the border area to the main paving. A border changes the dimensions of the central slab field, so calculate the two elements as a coordinated layout.

Measuring clay slimsetts

Pavestone Antique Rustic Clay Slimsett is listed in a 204 x 50 x 60mm format with a 7.3m² pack. If the setts form the whole surface, use the area and pack coverage. If they are being used as a soldier-course border, calculate the linear layout separately.

Patterns such as herringbone can create more edge cuts than a simple stretcher bond, so the laying design affects the final quantity.

Measuring patterned feature paving

Pavestone Mosaic Grey is available in 600 x 600mm slabs. If you want a 3m x 3m feature zone, the geometric area is 9m². You then need to select the pack option that covers the requirement with an appropriate allowance.

For a patterned insert within plain paving, set the feature dimensions around full or half modules where possible. This can make the finished design cleaner and reduce awkward cuts through decorative motifs.

Paths and narrow strips

Measure the full path length and average width, but also check whether the selected slab size fits the width sensibly. A 900mm-wide path can work neatly with certain formats; an unusual width may create repeated cuts along both edges.

Sometimes changing the paving orientation or adding a sett border produces a better result than cutting every main slab.

Steps and changes in level

Steps require more than the horizontal plan area. Treads, risers and edge details may use additional material or dedicated components. Measure each part and confirm whether the chosen product is suitable for the detail.

Do not use leftover patio area calculations to guess step quantities. Steps are highly visible and often involve precise cuts.

Calculating priming slurry

Installation products need quantity calculations too. Pavestone Priming Slurry 12.5kg states approximate coverage of 15m² per tub in the current listing. If the paving area is substantially larger than that, calculate the number of tubs from the project area while allowing for real application conditions.

Coverage figures are approximate and can vary with application, so do not plan to use every gram with zero margin.

Calculating grout or jointing material

Grout usage depends on joint width, depth and slab format, not only area. A patio made from small units has more linear metres of joints than the same area covered with large slabs. Measure the finished level against doors, steps and drainage. The paving thickness plus bedding or support system determines the final height. This is especially important around bifold or sliding doors where buyers often want a visually low transition.

Do not reduce necessary drainage or waterproofing details simply to make the paving align with a threshold.

Delivery and storage

Large paving orders are heavy and bulky. Plan where they can be safely delivered and stored. Keep access clear for installation and protect slabs from damage. On roof projects, do not concentrate large quantities of paving in one area without considering structural loading.
