uPVC Window Sizes UK: How to Choose the Right Window
There is no single standard uPVC window size in the UK. Homes use openings of many different widths and heights, and window configuration is just as important as the outer dimensions. A 610mm-wide top-hung window is not interchangeable with a 610mm-wide side-hung window simply because the frame size is similar.
This guide explains how to choose the right size from our uPVC windows range, how structural opening dimensions relate to frame sizes and what to check before ordering a stock Crystal casement window.
What Does Window Size Refer To?
Product dimensions normally refer to the complete outer frame width and height, not the visible glass. Always check the individual listing to confirm. The structural opening in the building must be larger than the frame by the fitting tolerance specified by the manufacturer or installer.
A cill may be a separate component and can affect the overall installation height or projection, so include it in planning.
Why There Is No One Standard UK Window Size
UK housing spans centuries, and openings vary between period properties, post-war homes, extensions and modern new builds. Even windows in the same house can differ. Stock manufacturers therefore offer a range of common sizes rather than one universal standard.
Measure every opening independently. Never order a whole house from one bedroom-window measurement.
Compact uPVC Window Sizes
Our Crystal range includes compact casement windows around 610mm wide in various heights and opener configurations. Smaller units can suit bathrooms, cloakrooms, utility rooms and narrow openings depending on project requirements.
The Crystal UPVC White Casement Window Top Hung Opener Over Fixed Light Obscure Glazing includes variants such as 610mm-wide frames at multiple heights, showing how one width can serve different openings.
Medium and Large Casement Windows
Larger windows may use a side-hung sash next to a fixed light or two opening sashes around a centre fixed panel. Overall width increases, but so does configuration complexity. Choose based on both structural size and how you want the window to ventilate.
A multi-light frame should be treated as one complete manufactured system rather than several separate window sizes added together.
Window Width vs Opening Width
The structural opening must allow the frame to be positioned square and packed. Therefore the frame width is slightly less than the usable aperture, but the exact difference is product- and installation-specific.
Measure the opening at the top, centre and bottom. Use our uPVC window measuring guide for a complete method.
Window Height and Cills
Measure height at the left, centre and right from the correct bottom datum. If a new uPVC cill is included, confirm whether the product’s height includes it or whether it adds to the installation dimension.
Existing stone sills, internal boards and external render can disguise the true opening, so have the installer confirm the structural aperture where necessary.
Top-Hung Window Sizes
Top-hung openers can be used as a single sash or above fixed glazing. The outside projection of the sash matters as well as width and height. Check eaves, pipes and other external features for clearance.
Smaller top openers can offer ventilation while keeping most of the lower glass fixed, which is a common configuration in bathrooms and other compact rooms.
Side-Hung Window Sizes
Side-hung casements create a larger opening and can be left- or right-hand hinged. The overall frame may share dimensions with another product, but the handing changes how the room and exterior space are used.
Do not assume a right-hand product can be flipped during installation. Select the correct factory configuration.
Fixed-Light Window Sizes
A fixed light does not open, so it can maximise glass area within a given frame. Larger windows often combine fixed and opening sections. Check whether a central panel is fixed, whether side sashes open and how that affects cleaning and ventilation.
Configuration diagrams are more useful than size alone when comparing these products.
Obscure-Glazed Window Sizes
Bathrooms and cloakrooms often need obscure glazing. Our range includes obscure-glazed top-hung and side-hung products in white and grey/white frame combinations. Availability can vary by exact size.
Choose the opening size first, then confirm that the required obscure-glass configuration exists in that dimension.
Grey and White Window Sizes
Grey 7016 external frames can match contemporary exterior schemes, while white internal faces suit many room finishes. White-only frames may offer a different range of size variants. Check availability rather than assuming every colour has identical dimensions.
Where you are replacing several windows, create a schedule showing opening size and chosen colour for each location.
How to Choose the Nearest Stock Size
Measure the structural aperture and compare it with available frame dimensions plus the required fitting tolerance. If no stock frame is appropriate, do not use excessive packing to force a poor match.
Depending on the project, the opening may be adjustable, another size/configuration may work or a made-to-measure solution may be necessary.
Can uPVC Windows Be Trimmed to Fit?
No. A complete factory-made uPVC frame should not be cut down like a timber door leaf. The profiles contain reinforcement, drainage, welded corners, glazing rebates and hardware positions. Order the correct size or modify the building opening appropriately under competent guidance.
New-Build Window Openings
If masonry or timber framing is not yet complete, select the window size before forming the final aperture. Give the builder the exact frame dimensions and manufacturer’s required opening, including cill and cavity-closure details.
This reduces waste and avoids later cutting or packing.
Replacement Window Openings
Old frames can conceal part of the structural aperture. Remove trims or have the installer probe the edges to establish the true size. Do not assume the new frame should exactly copy the old outer dimensions.
Check whether render or plaster will be repaired and whether frame position within the reveal will change.
Window Size and Building Regulations
Overall dimensions can affect ventilation, means of escape, guarding and safety glazing depending on the room and project. A stock frame that physically fits may not automatically satisfy the functional requirements of the opening.
Use current Building Regulations guidance and competent professional advice where relevant, particularly when changing window configuration rather than making a like-for-like replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a standard uPVC window size?
There is no single standard. Manufacturers offer a range of common stock sizes, and you should match the actual structural opening to an appropriate frame.
Are window sizes the glass size?
No. Product dimensions normally refer to the overall frame. The visible glass is smaller because of the frame and sash profiles.
Can I fit a smaller window into a larger opening?
Only if the opening is properly altered or framed to suit. Excessive packing around an undersized frame is not a good substitute for the correct window size.
Can I cut a uPVC window frame down?
No. Factory-made uPVC frames should not be trimmed to resize them.
Do grey windows come in the same sizes as white?
Sometimes, but availability can vary by product. Check the exact variant list in the required colour.
